Smart cities are the emergence of technology-driven societies where most processes are computerized and interconnected through IoT. Valuable data can be easily gathered through the IoT in smart cities to determine the changing demand patterns and respond efficiently in lesser time providing low-cost solutions. Smart cities improve the basic infrastructure of the cities using technology to improve transportation, efficient energy consumption, public safety, and the use of smart grids.

In short, smart cities aim to improve their inhabitants’ lifestyle by employing the latest technological processes through IoT. Smart cities and IoT require a fast speed/low latency internet service like the 5G Spectrum Internet only to back their complex and highly integrated systems.

What Is 5G Technology?

5G or the fifth-generation mobile internet is the latest and the fastest version of the internet that is believed to revolutionize our daily chores and business processes when employed smartly. It has an ultra-high speed of 20 gigabytes per second Gbps with an extremely low latency of 1 millisecond. This makes it the most reliable Internet service available to date. Owing to its speed and reduced latency 5G technology is capable of supporting a large number of IoT devices. This makes it a viable choice to support smart cities. It is being used in various fields such as healthcare, manufacturing, education, retail, and gaming.5G is also capable of supporting innovative technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality which was not supported by the previous generations of the internet.

Use of 5G in IoT

IoT requires a fast and steady internet connection with reduced latency to support the large number of devices integrated into the system. 5G networks can withhold the IoT devices and back their processes. 5G is supportive of IoT because of the following factors:

High Speed – The high speed of the 5G network has the ability to hold and transfer large amounts of data generated by the number of devices attached to the IoT systems. The high bandwidth capacity enables more devices to be connected to the system making it more integrated and unified which enables the formation of greater projects such as smart cities and industrial mechanization.

Reduced Latency – Low latency means higher responsiveness and faster communication. The extremely low level of latency of 5G networks increases its reliability and so it can be used in applications where real-time correspondence is required such as drones, medical care, and autonomous vehicles.

Greater Reliability – 5G networks have certain built-in features such as multi-access edge computing and network slicing that increase their performance and reliability even in areas with network congestion. 5G provides a stable internet connection to IoT devices enabling them to perform efficiently without collapsing.

Higher Capacity – The 5G network has a high per-unit capacity to support IoT devices as compared to the previous generations of the internet.

Security – 5G networks have built-in security features such as network slicing, secure boot, and element to prevent cyber-attacks and protect IoT devices from data breaches.

5G Technology in Smart City Applications

5G technology can help in processing a vast number of applications in smart cities such as:

Smart Traffic Management – the traffic lights in 5G technology make use of sensors and other IoT devices backed by 5G to ensure a smooth flow of traffic and avoid congestion.

Safety – Advanced cameras are installed in the entire city to ensure public safety using 5G-enabled advanced technologies such as video surveillance and facial recognition.

Healthcare – 5G technology has enabled remote patient monitoring which has helped doctors keep in touch with their patients even when they are off-premises. Live monitoring and virtual diagnosis have enabled better responses to patient care.

Smart Grids – 5G powered smart grids have enabled efficient use of energy, maximizing usage while lowering cost.

Smart buildings – 5G technology possesses the ability to construct smart buildings with an automated and integrated centralized system including heating and air conditioning, ventilation, water, electricity, computing systems, elevators emergency exits, parking, and security. In short, all utilities in the building are controlled over a single IoT device.
